Bob Harper’s Hidden Heart Killer: Lipoprotein a

This is Bob Harper.  He is best known as the personal trainer for the Biggest Loser TV show.  He was vegetarian and then became vegan.   He is an avid CrossFit athlete and practices transcendental meditation.  A poster boy for sure ………but not for heart disease.

So why did he have a heart attack?

Because he had a high Lipoprotein a, Lp(a)

In February of 2017 the Journal of the American College of Cardiology published a paper on Lp(a) stating that Lipid disorders can be broadly divided into 4 “clinical” categories:
   1   ↑ low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C),  called “good cholesterol”
   2   ↓ high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C),  called “bad cholesterol”
   3   ↑  triglycerides,
   4   ↑ elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]).

You may have heard  of the first three, but likely not Lp(a)

It’s a different kind of particle that gives you an independent higher risk of heart attack, stroke and valve disease.

There’s some controversy about statins and Lp(a) right now because this is some evidence that they not only don’t help Lp(a) they may actually make it worse.

We are only beginning to find out ways to lower it.  No drugs are specifically FDA approved to lower it but there are a few promising natural therapies.

One in five people have this.  Why it’s high is almost all genetic.

I am one of those one in five as are both my mother and father.    I wish we’d had this test in 1965. Had we known then what we know now,  maybe my father would have been spared the 6 vessel bypass in he had in 1985.

I am one of those one in five.  Are you?

 I’d find out.
