Hypothyroid

Hypothyroid or Low Thyroid Function

Do you have any of the following?

Fatigue, weight gain even on a strict diet, morning headaches, depression, constipation, sensitivity to cold, poor circulation, muscle cramps, digestive problems, dry skin or hair, facial swelling or loss of the outer one third of your eyebrows.

Then it is very possible that you might have an underactive thyroid or hypothyroid.

27 million people in the United States suffer with thyroid dysfunction.  Half of those actually have Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism, an autoimmune disorder where the person’s own immune system attacks thyroid tissue.

Your thyroid is hugely important in maintaining energy levels by controlling the rate of energy production, it maintains body temperature, and is a key player in brain chemistry affecting mood and emotions.

Conventional medicine evaluates thyroid function by only looking at blood levels of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) as a result they miss many cases.  Only evaluating TSH levels is a recipe for failure as it fails to evaluate pituitary function, whether thyroid hormones are working properly throughout the body and whether there is an autoimmune reaction happening.

Once TSH is found to be high which would suggest that the thyroid function is depressed, regular doctors look to address it with prescription thyroid hormones to increase function.

The problem is that, only addressing thyroid levels completely miss the real reason that your thyroid is suffering in the first place.  Things like gut infections, adrenal problems, irregular immune function, leptin resistance, hormone dysfunction and blood sugar dysregulation all depress thyroid function.

At the Health and Wellness of Carmel our functional medicine doctors actually look to the root cause of your situation and address it in a healthy and holistic way while supporting thyroid function!  A full thyroid panel will be ordered to help with evaluation, but along with that the systems that contribute to depressing thyroid function will also be evaluated so that we can offer you the most effective and holistic approach to care.

If you have any of the symptoms above, or feel that your last doctor missed the diagnosis, or are looking to find a more integrative medicine approach to your thyroid condition... one that actually addresses the root cause of your symptoms rather than sugar coating it with only thyroid medication, give us a call!
