Holistic Approach to Diabetes – Health and Wellness Clinic in Carmel IN
Blog by Amanda Patchett, FNP-C at Health and Wellness of Carmel IN.
It’s estimated that over 100 million Americans have prediabetes or diabetes as of 2017 and unfortunately this number is expected to continue to rise. The most unbelievable part about this is that type 2 diabetes is almost always preventable! Type 2 diabetes, if not treated, is incredibly devastating to health long term and can lead to blindness, kidney disease/failure, nerve damage, leg amputations, and even death in unmanaged cases.
Almost every day, there is a new advertisement for the latest and greatest type 2 diabetic medications. These advertisements paint a picture of happy adults who are exercising, cooking healthy meals, playing with their children or grandchildren, etc. Moreover, just like the end of most every drug commercial, there is a long list of side effects and risks. The other unfortunate thing about many of the newer diabetic medications is that they are often very expensive for the patients.
That is where a holistic approach to diabetes is incredibly important and key to reversing type 2 diabetes. As suspected, most health conditions including type 2 diabetes starts with diet. We have an expert holistic dietician in our office that can help formulate an eating plan that makes sense for each individual patient. Most people are aware to avoid refined sugar and processed foods however; there are other foods that are considered “healthy” that can still contribute to elevated glucose levels. This is where dietary guidance can be so helpful to clarify exactly what type of diet to follow and which foods to avoid ensuring success in lowering glucose levels.
On the flip-side there are many foods that can be extremely helpful with glucose levels including fiber rich foods, foods high in chromium and magnesium, and healthy fats. After a complete laboratory evaluation, a ketogenic diet can be very beneficial under medical supervision for some patients. Also, there are many natural supplements that can be helpful with increasing insulin sensitivity, lowering glucose levels, and weight loss.
This is one of the many conditions that I love working with patients on simply because we have so much success with reverse prediabetes and diabetes with a holistic approach!
