Natural Hormone Balance in Women

There is a definite difference in the perspective and approach to treatment of hormone imbalance in the functional medicine model versus the traditional medicine approach.

What do we even mean when we say “hormone imbalance?” Oftentimes, young women assume that intense menstrual cramps, mood instability leading into their menstrual cycle, breast tenderness, headaches, and heavy menstrual flow is considered “normal.” In the traditional medicine approach it’s often suggested to treat these symptoms with an oral contraceptive pill. Unfortunately, this just suppresses the symptoms and can in turn lead to hormone dysregulation and create more systemic issues in the future. So in most cases, oral contraceptive use to control hormonal symptoms should be avoided. In the functional medicine approach we consider what other factors can contribute to hormonal imbalance such as inflammation, poor diet, low vitamin and mineral levels, and other endocrine system imbalances. Most importantly we measure and assess hormone levels to determine exactly what the issue is. Depending on the outcome of these tests, we treat those imbalances naturally and more often times than not, see complete resolution in hormonal symptoms.

Moving beyond the younger patient population, we see many women who have complaints associated with perimenopause and menopause. These symptoms include menstrual irregularity, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain, changes in libido, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and migraine headaches. Although unfortunately these hormonal changes are an expected part of aging, the functional medicine approach is to continue to balance hormones and help patients through this transition as easily as possible while using anti-aging strategies.

Many of the same factors mentioned above such as diet, vitamin and mineral levels, inflammation also influence the intensity of menopausal symptoms. Rather than taking a heavy-handed approach to hormone replacement, our functional medicine approach would be to investigate and address all contributing factors and after those have been addressed, oftentimes subtle support via hormones is all a woman needs.

The most important message is that hormone imbalance is usually a sign of other problems in the body. Hormone dysregulation is usually nothing more than a symptom and it’s important to look at the whole person holistically to address these issues. We are happy to help guide patients through the process to achieve optimum hormone balance!
